Now You See It

Gwen sits in the corner of the nursery, waiting for Anwen to fall asleep. Watching the figures on her daughter’s mobile cast shadows on the wall as they drift slowly above the cot.

A dragon. A girl holding a fairy wand. A wizard with a flowing cloak.

Through her tired eyes, the shadows morph.

A weevil. A brave woman in leather holding a gun. A handsome man in a long coat.

Then the moonlight shifts. And the dragon is no longer a weevil, and the girl is just an ordinary girl, and the man in the coat is gone.

Again.

Liked this a lot. The shadows work really well, flipping back and forth btwn Gwen's worlds, and the last line nails it.
