First Fandom Challenge: Buffy the Vampire Slayer was the first show I was truly obsessed with. It was the show I wrote my first proper fanfiction for (which nobody apart from me has read, even now!), and the show that has had the biggest impact on my life. Back when we first got dial-up internet, I would spend ages waiting for photos of Angel to load up so I could print them off to drool over. And I love it as much now as I did when it first aired 18 years ago. These days I’m more of a Buffy/Spike girl, but seeing as this is a ‘first fandom’ challenge, I thought I’d use my original ship, and when I was a teenager I was a huge Buffy/Angel fan.

Buffy is a 16 year old vampire slayer, Angel is a 241 year old vampire with a soul trying to make amends for the terrible things he did when he didn’t have soul. They fall in love, and on Buffy’s 17th birthday, they finally sleep together. But the curse that gave Angel his soul had a clause: if he ever experienced a moment of true happiness, he would lose his soul and all he held dear. After their night together, Buffy wakes to find Angel has once again become Angelus, a soulless monster bent on her destruction.

This mix follows Buffy from the initial forbidden attraction to Angel, to the night they give in to their desires, to the morning after and Buffy’s heartbreak. It continues through Buffy’s fear and hate towards Angelus, and then her attempt to find a way to restore his soul. It ends when Angel’s soul is finally restored – moments too late – and Buffy must kill him anyway to save the world, after one final kiss to remember him by. I’ve tried to choose tracks that I think Buffy would have identified with.

Oh, Buffy! Buffy and Angel! Yes, this was my first true shipping experience (and I still ship them, actually, even now, though I'm more of a general Whedonite these days), and... yeah, my first real fanfic was written about them (sighs for nostalgia). I still think one of my life highlights was winning an award in the Very Suave, Very Not Pathetic Slayerette site awards.
(puts on oldtimer hat) You think the dialup was bad? I don't live in the US, and I had to make contact with people over the net to ship me video tapes in order to watch it! Which meant I was always spoiled for major events for weeks before I ever saw it (gloom). You have NO idea what a difference broadband and Kazaa made in my fandom life. Bless them.

Ah, video tapes! I live in the UK but I didn't have Sky TV so I used to give a blank video to a friend at school every week and get her to record the episode and then give it back to me! /o\ Thank goodness those times are gone!
