Question List

Day 3: Favourite Female Character in a COMEDY show
Jackie Burkhart (That 70s Show)

Some gender stereotypes are hard to shift, and despite the growing prominence of more female stand-up acts, and the emergence of successful new female-led shows like 30 Rock, there still seems to be a tendency to think of men as the gender more capable of comedy. Certainly when I think of comedians, it's people like Jimmy Carr, Michael McIntyre and David Mitchell who come to mind. And when I think about the funniest characters on TV, my mind usually goes to Chandler from Friends or Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory. But when I focused on this question, I realised I actually had a long list of hilarious and awesome female comic characters, all portrayed by super-talented actresses. Runners up who I'd have liked to have chosen included Amy Farrah-Fowler and Penny from TBBT, Lily from How I Met Your Mother and Elliot from Scrubs. My top comedy girl, however, is Jackie Burkhart.

Jackie is a self-proclaimed bitch - stuck up, self-obsessed and condescending - the sort of person I usually hate. And yet, I adore her. She has her bad points, yes, but she also has a lot of characteristics that we could all stand to cultivate: she's funny, smart, confident, honest, open, passionate, forgiving and optimistic. I wish I could have just a little of her self-assurance and believe that I am always the best looking girl in the room! Also, she has the cutest 70s outfits, and she does roller-disco. I kind of wish I lived in the 70s occasionally, just so I could be like her.

I should also say how much I LOVE Mila Kunis, who plays Jackie. She learned English from TV when she was little, and essentially conned her way into the role of Jackie at age 14 by assuring producers she would be 18 'on her birthday'...just, err, not her next birthday. After That 70s Show ended, I would occasionally ramble on about how awesome she was and why was she not in all the films and magazines and why did no one else care about her - and then came Black Swan. And now she's a megastar, and I still insist we go and see all her films at the cinema rather than waiting for DVD, just to make sure she stays that way.
