I feel a lot like journalling at the moment, so apologies for the surprise influx of posts! But whilst I'm in the mood I thought I'd dig this out again. HALFWAY THROUGH THE MEME IN 11 MONTHS! I'll try and get in finished by 27th March so I can say it didn't take longer than a year :)

Question List

Day 15: Favourite NON-HUMAN female character
Anya Jenkins (Buffy)

Born in 862AD, Anya was the oldest main character in Buffy, and the one who had least concept of what it was to be human, because it was so long since she'd been anything other than a Vengeance Demon. But as soon as she joins the show, that identity is taken from her, and she has to learn how to be a person again: how to have friends, how to love, how to be vulnerable, how to deal with death and loss. For a lot of the time this learning process is used as purely light relief, but Anya is so much more than a tactless, capitalism-appreciating comic character. She is a girl whose instinct, developed over hundreds of years, is to be selfish and vengeful and not to fight for good or for love; she is a girl who overcomes those instincts and becomes a heroine.  The great thing about Buffy is that the characters grow and change, and Anya is one of the best examples of that. She makes mistakes along the way, big mistakes, but she doesn't give up.

I know most people's favourite speech of Anya's is in The Body, but mine is in End of Days, when she manages to sum up the human spirit in typical Anya fashion:

Anya: There was this other apocalypse this one time. And, well, I took off. But this time, I don't... I don't know.
Andrew: Well, what's different?
Anya: Well, I guess I was kinda new to being around humans before. And now I've seen a lot more, gotten to know people, seen what they're capable of and I guess I just realize how amazingly... screwed up they all are. I mean, really, really screwed up in a monumental fashion.
Andrew: Oh.
Anya: And they have no purpose that unites them, so they just drift around, blundering through life until they die. Which they know is coming, yet every single one of them is surprised when it happens to them. They're incapable of thinking about what they want beyond the moment. They kill each other, which is clearly insane, and yet, here's the thing. When it's something that really matters, they fight. I mean, they're lame morons for fighting. But they do. They never... They never quit. And so I guess I will keep fighting, too.

I feel like I started this meme a couple of months ago. Apparently, I actually started it in... March. I never planned to do it in 30 consecutive days, but still, March? Ridiculous! So, let's get things moving again.

(On the plus side, it's occurred to me that in the intervening months I've learned how to use gifs, so we'll be having those rather than pictures from now on \o/)*

Question List

Day 14: Favourite Female Character who is a MOTHER
Miranda Bailey (Grey's Anatomy)

I didn't have too many characters to choose from for this question - oddly, there seem to be very few women with children in the shows I watch, probably due to the fact that they're either too young, or focused on their careers/fighting the forces of evil. However, Miranda Bailey is a great example of a character who manages to juggle the demands of being a single mum with those of being a sought-after surgeon moving up through the ranks at Seattle Grace. Bailey is not just a good mum to her own child, she is also a surrogate mother to all the idiotic challenging interns under her care. She takes care of them, forces them to be better doctors and better people, and is a fantastic role model of a woman who is strong and tough but also emotional and compassionate. The season six finale where she battles through her fear to try and help Charles is both amazing and heartbreaking. If I was a medical intern, I'd want Bailey in charge and on my side.

*I didn't make the gifs and won't be taking credit for them!

Day 13: Favourite Female Characters that holds a POSITION OF POWER
C.J. Cregg (The West Wing)

Even in this modern age, I don't see a lot of truly inspirational women in positions of power on TV. And I see even less who are funny, identifiable and sympathetic with it. C.J. Cregg, press secretary for President Bartlet, is an incredible character and the type of woman who I wish I could be. She is strong-willed, strong-minded, sharp, witty, sarcastic, eloquent and articulate. She has a determined sense of right and wrong and she is willing to fight for her opinions, but she also knows when to be practical, when to stay quiet, when to be calm. In seven years of The West Wing she barely puts a foot wrong (unlike the majority of men in the show who, whilst almost without exception are admirable and honourable, still spend a lot of time messing up).

If I ever have a daughter and she decides she wants to grow up to be like a woman on TV, I hope she chooses C.J. Cregg.

Question List

Day 12: Favourite YOUNGER Female Character
Quinn Fabray (Glee)

I wasn't sure who to choose for this question. A good deal of the characters I watch/have watched on TV could be classed as 'younger', due to my love of high-school shows, both now and a few years ago when I was that age. I thought therefore that I should pick an actual child, but I can't think of any actual children in TV shows who I've liked. So I have deemed high school to be young enough, and decided to choose someone from Glee, mostly because unlike a lot of high school shows where the characters look and act way too old for their age, the kids in Glee actually act like they really are foolish teenagers.

At first I chose Rachel, but when trying to write the blurb for her, I found I couldn't do so with much passion. I like Rachel. I like to watch her. I like her looks, and her talent, and the incredibly comic moments she has. But I don't really identify with her. She is more talented than I will ever be. She has her life planned out and she will almost certainly achieve her dreams. I don't know what I'm doing, and I almost certainly will not achieve any of my dreams, due to my ill health. She has a belief in herself that is beyond anything I've ever felt. And so I wondered, who else could I choose who might be a little more identifiable?

I hated Quinn at first. Probably because I liked Rachel, and also because she was written to be the character you hated. But after a while, I started to like her. More importantly, I started to understand her. She makes mistakes, she lies, she is at many times not a good person. But I could see why she did the things she did, I could feel her insecurity, I could sympathise with her idiotic moments. Quinn has been through a lot, and whilst she's not always been through it in the right way, she has come out the other side. And she has an occasional moment of kindness amid a history of meanness, or positivity amid an atmosphere of negativity, where I look at her and think: wow. Of course, it's Glee, so sometimes the insane writing puts her actions beyond the pale (her behaviour at Shelby's apartment, for example), but I'm just going to ignore that, because, y'know... it's Glee.

Question List

Day 11: Favourite OLDER Female Character
Kitty Forman (That 70s Show)

Ok, so Kitty's not old old - probably mid-40s when the show began, and mid-50s when it ended, but within the show she is the matriarch, and she is still admittedly older than most of the characters in most of the shows I watch, so she qualifies.

Kitty is the mother of main character Eric Forman, and by extension, the mother figure for all of his friends, who tend to pretty much live at his house (indeed, some of them actually do come to live at his house, due to Kitty's insistence on taking in waifs and strays). Kitty is a truly fantastic mother and wife - she takes care of everyone, and everyone loves her for it (and is scared of her wrath!) She is also hilariously funny, knows how to get what she wants, and manages to run a household, keep control of her infuriating husband and son, and have a career as a nurse all at the same time (and all whilst keeping her hair perfectly rolled). She is kind, strong, quirky and a force to be reckoned with. I would love to have her in my life. And, whilst many other TV characters are almost too aspirational for me, Kitty is someone who inspires me and sets a near-realistic standard for the sort of person I could be - if I tried really, really hard.

Question List

Day 10: Favourite Female Character in a MALE DRIVEN show
Donna Moss (The West Wing)

The West Wing is a pretty obvious choice for a male driven show. There are so many men in it! And they are not just driving the show, they're driving the United States of America. These are powerful, powerful men. And yet Donna Moss, Senior Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman, is frequently the most sensible and intelligent person in the room.

Donna was never supposed to be a regular character, just a recurring one, and she was also never intended as Josh's long term love interest, a role that was originally granted to Moira Kelly. But as soon as writer Aaron Sorkin saw one of Josh and Donna's scenes being performed in the pilot, he realised how awesome Janel Moloney was and how much chemistry she had with Bradley Whitford, and Donna was soon both a series regular and one half of The West Wing's most adorable almost-couple.

I loved Donna for many reasons, but mostly because she was real. She made stupid mistakes, she put both Josh and the administration at risk, she was unlucky in love, she was afraid of her feelings for Josh and she was reluctant to pursue her own career if it meant not working for him anymore. She wasn't perfect, or super strong, she was just real. She was also loving, funny, sarcastic, smart, determined, open and brave. Despite all the fantastic male characters on the show, Donna stood out for me as something special.

Runner Up: Jordan McDeere (Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip)

I couldn't resist adding a runner up to this entry, partly because Jordan is brilliant but isn't mentioned elsewhere on the meme, and partly because more people should know about and love Studio 60. As Studio 60 begins, Jordan becomes the new president of the NBS network. It's a tough job and she's not welcomed by everyone, but she is a success nonetheless. In both a male-dominated world and a male-dominated show (the show's central characters are Matt and Danny, the writers of a sketch comedy show), Jordan shines. And fun fact? Her love interest is also played by Bradley Whitford.

Question List

Day 9: Favourite FEMALE DRIVEN show
Grey's Anatomy

At first I wasn’t sure which show to pick for this question. I considered Ally McBeal, a show I used to adore so much that my Wednesday evenings revolved around watching it and I even had an essential snack which was eaten only during Ally (rose and lemon flavoured Turkish delight, accompanied by lemonade-and-orange-juice). I thought about Alias, another fantastic show with a strong, impressive central character. But then I focused on the term ‘female-driven’ and wondered whether these shows were exactly what I was looking for. Ally McBeal is centred around Ally, but mostly portrays her work in a male-run law firm, her relationships with men and her competition with other women. Alias centres around Sydney but always portrays her in a world dominated by powerful men, a world which she fights against, but which she is primarily enabled to fight against by other powerful men who give her the means to do so.

Then I thought about Grey’s Anatomy. This is a show with not just one central female character, but various central female characters. And though they are in one of the most competitive arenas possible – a surgical intern program – and a profession traditionally dominated by men, the female characters manage both to form strong ties to each other and to excel in their careers.

There are almost as many men as women in the show, but in an unusual move, they are defined primarily by the women around them. Derek and Burke may be renowned, powerful surgeons, but their storylines, certainly at the start of the programme, revolve around the women who choose to love them. Even when a major event befalls one of them – Burke’s post-shooting hand problems, for example – the plot is contrived to show its effect on their female partner; it is Cristina’s decision to help Burke conceal his problem that is focused on.

Part of what I love about Grey’s is the way that it refuses to portray women in a stereotypical manner. Cristina, for example, would traditionally be portrayed as the sort of character viewers love to hate. She is a ‘shark’ – ambitious, cold, hates children and feelings and weakness and family. These are qualities often seen as acceptable (possibly even sexy) in male characters, yet repulsive in females. But Cristina is one of the two or three main characters; she is best friends with our protagonist; she is given some of the best storylines. You might not like her at first, but if you want to keep watching, you have to get used to her. And after a while, you see she is a pretty great person in a lot of ways, and that perhaps it’s ok for a woman to be as ambitious as she wants to be.

Then there’s Addison. Addison should have been the character everyone hated. She drove apart the show’s premier couple, she was an ‘adulterous bitch’ even by her own admission, and she was beautiful and successful. But she was never written to make the viewers hate her. Believe me, I tried. And I failed. I can only assume everyone else failed too, seeing as she ended up with her own very successful spin-off show.

There are no one dimensional females in this show. There is no encouragement from the writers for us to dislike or disapprove of any of the women, or their choices. This is a show driven by amazing women – Meredith, Cristina, Izzie, Bailey, Addison, Callie, Arizona, Lexie – who work hard, love hard, and who inspire me.

Question List

Day 8: Favourite Female Character in a FANTASY/SUPERNATURAL show
George Lass (Dead Like Me)

Dead Like Me is not a well-known programme - in fact, I don't know anyone in RL who's actually heard of it, aside from when I asked them 'Have you seen Dead Like Me?' This is a shame, because it's an excellent show with a solid, well-woven premise, a very cool fantasy element, and a strong cast playing brilliant, intriguing characters. The second season was undoubtedly poorer than the first, no doubt due to the departure of key staff, but even so I think it should have run beyond two seasons. There is a follow-up film though, which I have yet to see.

Georgia Lass is the show's central character. She is dead (at this point you may begin to see where the title of the show has come from). George is not thrilled to be dead, especially considering that she was killed by a falling toilet seat from a Russian space station. When it turns out that she has to become a Reaper, guiding souls to the next life but never actually getting to access that next life herself, she is even less impressed. Then she learns she is also still visible to those around her - albeit with a different appearance - and she has to get along in the world, including the horror of getting a day job.

The thing I instantly loved about George, and the thing that many people would no doubt instantly hate, was her sarcasm - evident immediately in the voiceover. George has a biting wit which sits comfortably alongside her self-involvement, apathy, bitterness and general teenage angst. I can't think of another American programme with such a cynical teen protagonist; in some ways she's like a young Greg House. And I adore her - because if I had been killed at 17 by a toilet seat, I would probably have bitched and snarked my way through the afterlife too.

Normally, you'd expect a character like George to Learn and Grow. And she does, a little - in her own twisted, messed up ways, she begins to build relationships with the fellow reapers, establish a career and friendships with the odd people at her work, and guide her dysfunctional family to ways of dealing with their grief. But she never really changes; she never loses her edge, and I love her for it. If I had to be a reaper, I'd want her reaping and snarking right there next to me.

Question List

Day 7: Favourite Female Character in a CHILDREN'S show
Rose Tyler (Doctor Who)

OK, so technically Doctor Who is a family show and not exclusively a children's show, but of the few children's shows that I can remember well enough, or still watch, there were not really any characters worthy of this meme. Besides, [livejournal.com profile] chamilet used Rose for this question too, so I figure it's good enough ;)

Billie Piper was the reason I turned Doctor Who on in the first place. I'd never had any interest in the programme before, and although I was a Buffy nut, I didn't identify myself as a 'sci-fi' fan. And I'd never heard of Christopher Eccleston. I had however, heard of Billie, having bought her first and second albums thanks to joyful songs such as 'Because We Want To' *blush*. So without Billie being advertised as the Doctor's companion, I would probably never have watched the reboot, never have seen Captain Jack, and possibly never have watched Torchwood. MY LIFE WOULD BE SO EMPTY NOW, WAIIIIL!

So, what's Rose like? In a word: awesome. She was so normal, so accessible, so like any one of us. She ate too many chips and wore too much mascara and didn't know what she was doing with her life. But she was sweet, funny, resilient, and smart in a useful way. She had qualities to aspire to: courage and determination. And she was flawed too, making her even more believable - who didn't cringe as they saw the way she treated Mickey? I saw myself in her flaws, so believed I could also perhaps be as awesome as her. One day.

I loved Rose with Nine, and I loved her even more with Ten. Her return to the series was not great, but that wasn't Rose's fault - in my opinion it was too rushed, too short, there was not enough for her to do, and so the ending was unsatisfactory. But that doesn't make me love her any less.

100 Things

cookiegirl: (Default)

{Take the 100 Things challenge!}

I saw this on my f-list a few days ago and was instantly intrigued. I love LJ, but I find it hard to keep up with sometimes, even though I'm always happier when I am posting regularly. Memes are super helpful in this regard - if I'm regularly posting about my favourite ships/characters/programs etc, then it's easier for me to pop in a few personal posts too!

I had a lot of ideas for this 100 things challenge, but they either seemed too broad and overwhelming (things I love, things I hate, music I like), too personal and introspective-y to write whilst I'm feeling as fragile as I am at the minute (memories, influences, photos, people in my life), or too similar to things I will meme about at other times (ships, characters, etc). Then, whilst browsing on YouTube as usual, I realised what I should do.

My 100 things will be 100 YouTube videos you should watch. There'll be gorgeous fan-videos for my fandoms, trailers for films or programmes that few people have heard of but should be seen, stand-up comedy that makes me laugh, music videos that rock my world, and a few odd bits and pieces that will hopefully brighten up your day as they brighten up mine. With nearly 1000 vids on my YouTube favourites, and a few more on various playlists, it shouldn't be too taxing to find videos to post. And I promise to write about them too, explaining how I came across them and why they mean something to me.

I hope you will watch and read along :D

Question List

Day 6: Favourite Female Character in a MEDICAL/PROCEDURAL show
Angela Montenegro (Bones)

I decided to choose a procedural rather than a medical show for this, seeing as I will be using Grey's Anatomy quite a bit later! The character of Angela is one that I loved from day one; she was the character I warmed to first on the show (despite having loved David Boreanaz since his very first alley-way appearance as Angel in Buffy!) Angela is warm, sweet, encouraging, and the sort of friend who would cry with you when you needed it, and force you to have fun when you needed that. I love her innocence and her love of Christmas, I enjoy her interactions with Hodgins, and I both admire and envy her self-confidence. Angela lives and loves on her own terms, but without being one of those irritating people that constantly point out how 'individual' they are.

Minor rant: I am a couple of seasons behind on Bones, and whilst image-searching on google for a cute Angela pic, I managed to see so many spoilers in just a couple of photos. My own fault for not forseeing that, I guess, but annoying nonetheless. Still, the spoilers did look sort of awesome!

Question List

Day 5: Favourite Female Character in a SCIENCE FICTION show
Maria DeLuca (Roswell)

Roswell was one of the first sci-fi shows I ever watched, and certainly one of the few shows featuring aliens that I've actually enjoyed. And although I loved most of the characters, Maria was my favourite. She was cast as the sidekick, the wacky friend to Liz's earnest main character, but she was so much more than that. She was a bundle of contradictions: sassy and fiesty, yet insecure, passionate and giving, yet guarded, loyal and reliable, yet totally random and impulsive. She was brilliantly played by Majandra Delfino (whose career I haven't kept up with since, but will attempt to get back to grips with now I've remembered how awesome she is). I would have watched and liked Roswell without Maria, but her presence made the show really special. Liz was a lovely character, but perhaps a little too 'good' for me to identify fully with; Maria with her mood swings and wild emotions and amusing adventures with gel-filled bras, was a girl I could really believe in.

NOTE: DO NOT PANIC! If you are wondering frantically why another character from science fiction is not listed here, it is almost certainly because she has been assigned to a later day in the meme. I'm trying not to repeat characters, so although I could answer Buffy or Gwen for almost everything, I'm restraining myself. PANIC OVER.

Question List

Day 4: Favourite Female Character in a DRAMA show
Meredith Grey (Grey's Anatomy)

I don't watch many 'straight' dramas that don't also fit into another genre, so I've gone with a medical drama - after all, nobody can argue that Grey's isn't dramatic! I have to admit that when I first started watching Grey's at the very beginning, I wasn't that into Meredith - I didn't think she was particularly attractive or interesting and I didn't understand why everyone fancied her! A couple of years later I bought the DVDs of the first 2 seasons and did a re-watch, which firstly reminded me how brilliant the show is and inspired me to catch up with it, and secondly made me realise that actually, Meredith is pretty damn awesome.

Meredith describes herself as 'dark and twisty', and that's a pleasant change from the peppy characters you tend to get with American TV. She's introspective, damaged, motivated by past criticism from a no-longer-lucid mother and reluctant to let anyone in. She's difficult. She's also hopeful, clever, loving, loyal, ambitious and a good friend. She's the kind of girl I would like to have as a best friend, the kind of person that, as Christina once mentions, you could count on to come and help you move a body after you'd committed murder. And we could all do with one of those.

Question List

Day 3: Favourite Female Character in a COMEDY show
Jackie Burkhart (That 70s Show)

Some gender stereotypes are hard to shift, and despite the growing prominence of more female stand-up acts, and the emergence of successful new female-led shows like 30 Rock, there still seems to be a tendency to think of men as the gender more capable of comedy. Certainly when I think of comedians, it's people like Jimmy Carr, Michael McIntyre and David Mitchell who come to mind. And when I think about the funniest characters on TV, my mind usually goes to Chandler from Friends or Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory. But when I focused on this question, I realised I actually had a long list of hilarious and awesome female comic characters, all portrayed by super-talented actresses. Runners up who I'd have liked to have chosen included Amy Farrah-Fowler and Penny from TBBT, Lily from How I Met Your Mother and Elliot from Scrubs. My top comedy girl, however, is Jackie Burkhart.

Jackie is a self-proclaimed bitch - stuck up, self-obsessed and condescending - the sort of person I usually hate. And yet, I adore her. She has her bad points, yes, but she also has a lot of characteristics that we could all stand to cultivate: she's funny, smart, confident, honest, open, passionate, forgiving and optimistic. I wish I could have just a little of her self-assurance and believe that I am always the best looking girl in the room! Also, she has the cutest 70s outfits, and she does roller-disco. I kind of wish I lived in the 70s occasionally, just so I could be like her.

I should also say how much I LOVE Mila Kunis, who plays Jackie. She learned English from TV when she was little, and essentially conned her way into the role of Jackie at age 14 by assuring producers she would be 18 'on her birthday'...just, err, not her next birthday. After That 70s Show ended, I would occasionally ramble on about how awesome she was and why was she not in all the films and magazines and why did no one else care about her - and then came Black Swan. And now she's a megastar, and I still insist we go and see all her films at the cinema rather than waiting for DVD, just to make sure she stays that way.

Day 2: Favourite Female Character in a SUPPORTING role
Willow Rosenberg (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

One of the great things about watching a series that lasts for seven years is that you get to watch the characters change and grow. Willow was pretty amazing to start off with: smart, sweet, brave and adorable. But her journey from insecure schoolgirl to incredibly powerful witch is a stunning one and she arguably has the most character development on the show. Yet despite growing up so much, she retains her sweetness, optimism and love for her friends. Along the way she re-ensouls a vampire, dates a werewolf, overcomes addiction and saves the world a few times, thus earning her both a place on my meme and the title of my official Favourite Slayerette.
