Day 5: Favourite Female Character in a SCIENCE FICTION show
Maria DeLuca (Roswell)



Roswell was one of the first sci-fi shows I ever watched, and certainly one of the few shows featuring aliens that I've actually enjoyed. And although I loved most of the characters, Maria was my favourite. She was cast as the sidekick, the wacky friend to Liz's earnest main character, but she was so much more than that. She was a bundle of contradictions: sassy and fiesty, yet insecure, passionate and giving, yet guarded, loyal and reliable, yet totally random and impulsive. She was brilliantly played by Majandra Delfino (whose career I haven't kept up with since, but will attempt to get back to grips with now I've remembered how awesome she is). I would have watched and liked Roswell without Maria, but her presence made the show really special. Liz was a lovely character, but perhaps a little too 'good' for me to identify fully with; Maria with her mood swings and wild emotions and amusing adventures with gel-filled bras, was a girl I could really believe in.

NOTE: DO NOT PANIC! If you are wondering frantically why another character from science fiction is not listed here, it is almost certainly because she has been assigned to a later day in the meme. I'm trying not to repeat characters, so although I could answer Buffy or Gwen for almost everything, I'm restraining myself. PANIC OVER.

Um Hellz yes. I shipped the pooped out of Michael/Maria like I worked at a stable back in the day.

They were the homies.

And yes, they were SO much hotter than Max and Liz. I remember watching the episode where they go on the road trip together before anything had happened between them, and I definitely squeeeed, despite not knowing what squeeeing was back then!

Not that I want to hate on Liz/Max, but their passion was not even real compared to Marie & Michael.

I don't remember that epi! However, I do remember the Heat Wave epi and swooning. I may or may not of recorded that scene (note: not the entire episode) and watched it like A MILLION TIMES on VHS.

*sighs* It was a time before Katherine Hiegl was Katherine Heigl. And Collin Hanks was so hawt. *more swooning* L.O.V.E.d him in Mad Men.

Ahhh Heat Wave! I may have watched that a few times too! Though I did record the entire episode, so it was less weird ;)
I need a Heat Wave icon.

I have not seen Mad Men :( It is on my list of STUFF I MUST WATCH BEFORE I BECOME A CULTURAL PARIAH.

So, I was one of those Max/Liz shippers, and I wanted to basically be Liz back when I first watched Roswell, but as time went on and in retrospect, I really came to realize just how very awesome Maria is. I would so love to have her as a friend, because I am more the Liz type, the one who plays it safe, and I'd need her to get me to go do crazy things and find a zest for life! None of the shows my icons are from match these comments..heh.

Aww I did ship Max/Liz too, just not quite so passionately! But then I am a serious multi-shipper :D I think I'm probably halfway between Liz and Maria myself so I'd love to have either of them as a friend. Why are real-life friends never quite as awesome as TV friends?!

I have no Roswell icon either :( I think I am going to have to invest in a few more icons because I want some for all the new shows I like but I can't bear to let my old icons go!

Yeah, I tend to ship multiple couples too...and multiple with the same person (like Buffy/Angel and Buffy/Spike, Willow/Oz and Willow/Tara..) I have some Roswell icons I made a long time ago saved to my computer, but I recently got rid of my paid account so there's not enough room for everything!
