Day 8: Favourite Female Character in a FANTASY/SUPERNATURAL show
George Lass (Dead Like Me)

Dead Like Me is not a well-known programme - in fact, I don't know anyone in RL who's actually heard of it, aside from when I asked them 'Have you seen Dead Like Me?' This is a shame, because it's an excellent show with a solid, well-woven premise, a very cool fantasy element, and a strong cast playing brilliant, intriguing characters. The second season was undoubtedly poorer than the first, no doubt due to the departure of key staff, but even so I think it should have run beyond two seasons. There is a follow-up film though, which I have yet to see.

Georgia Lass is the show's central character. She is dead (at this point you may begin to see where the title of the show has come from). George is not thrilled to be dead, especially considering that she was killed by a falling toilet seat from a Russian space station. When it turns out that she has to become a Reaper, guiding souls to the next life but never actually getting to access that next life herself, she is even less impressed. Then she learns she is also still visible to those around her - albeit with a different appearance - and she has to get along in the world, including the horror of getting a day job.

The thing I instantly loved about George, and the thing that many people would no doubt instantly hate, was her sarcasm - evident immediately in the voiceover. George has a biting wit which sits comfortably alongside her self-involvement, apathy, bitterness and general teenage angst. I can't think of another American programme with such a cynical teen protagonist; in some ways she's like a young Greg House. And I adore her - because if I had been killed at 17 by a toilet seat, I would probably have bitched and snarked my way through the afterlife too.

Normally, you'd expect a character like George to Learn and Grow. And she does, a little - in her own twisted, messed up ways, she begins to build relationships with the fellow reapers, establish a career and friendships with the odd people at her work, and guide her dysfunctional family to ways of dealing with their grief. But she never really changes; she never loses her edge, and I love her for it. If I had to be a reaper, I'd want her reaping and snarking right there next to me.

Dead Like Me is what made me a Bryan Fuller fan to the point I will watch anything he works on.

Oh ♥

As long as I can stop with the show and not watch the godawful 'movie' that followed it without Rube and a recast Daisy, I'm good. :D

I mean to let you know that too...the movie kinda sucks. The only good thing about it is exploration of Reggie as a teenager and the sisterly dynamics there. And it's streamable on Netflix, if you are curious.

Gotta love Spike.

And yeah, netflix did suck me in to where sometimes I've paid for it and not used it that whole month. But to just stream is only 8 or 9 bucks a month, so it's usually worth it. of course I use various less-than-legal sites as well, but netflix is better quality and lets me watch random obscure movies, and the movie quality on some of those other sites can suck.

You don't know me, but I started tracking your 100 Things list the other day, and then I saw that you're posting awesome characters from good shows on your 30 Days of Females meme (George, Angela, Maria) and was wondering if it'd be ok for me to add you as a friend. Even though all this is public anyway, so I guess it doesn't really matter ;)

Omg is RDJ waving at me? Another fabulous reason to be friends- I kind of adore him. And as you can see, I am sometimes a big commenter. Though I love comments in my journal and replies to what I write, don't feel like you have to respond to it all all of the time :)

Omg we're MADE to be friends! That's how I got into him too, when I became an obsessive Ally McBeal fan a year and a half ago! God he is INCREDIBLE as Larry, and apparently he did that without even trying, since he was still dealing with all his drug issues then.

And I've been having that same trouble lately, with no one commenting on my journal and wondering what's up...but I've been posting some very depressing shit so maybe people want to avoid that...so beware. Hopefully it'll be better now.
