The Void

The end is nearing. He senses his heartbeat slowing, feels his stomach twisting, sees shadows playing at his vision’s edge.

He reaches for another handful of pills, chases them with another shot of whiskey.

Then he’s slipping back in his chair, drifting away.

Oblivion. Stillness. He’s here, and there’s nothing. No thoughts, no echoing screams, no loss.

He can’t stay. Blinding light licks at the darkness, shatters it. He’s being pulled over glass again.

He gasps, struggles, then stills. Memories crash back.

He reaches for the pills. All this for a few moments’ peace.

And it’s worth it, every time.
