Fic (Torchwood): Hold On

cookiegirlIt's occurred to me that there are still a few fics I wrote last year that never made it to my journal, so I thought I'd make a start on posting them. This is just a comment fic I wrote back in November, but I thought some of the Janto fans on my f-list might like to see!

‘You’re sure about this?’
‘Yes.’
‘Certain?’
‘Yes, Jack. I’m certain.’
Ianto was certain. He’d been nervous and edgy at home, checking and rechecking his tie, his hair, his shoes. He hadn’t seen his college friends for years and whilst he didn’t need their approval, he still wanted them to see that he was doing okay. He couldn’t very well tell them that he was an alien-hunting secret agent, but he could show them his completely-objectively-stunning boyfriend, and that was just as good. Or it would be just as good, if Jack and Ianto had been officially ‘together’ for more than a couple of weeks, if Ianto didn’t sometimes wonder whether Jack was planning on staying ‘together’, and if they’d ever done more in public than fondled under the table or danced at Gwen’s wedding.
Still, he was determined that he would walk into the restaurant hand-in-hand with Jack. Proud, fearless, in love, owning his relatively newfound sexuality and his much more newfound confidence in himself and his life.
‘Ianto?’
‘What?’
‘If you’re certain, why are we still standing outside?’
Ianto swallowed. ‘We’re not.’
He took Jack’s hand in his own and felt its warmth, its strength, its light calluses that every part of his own body knew so well. Jack squeezed, and they walked in.
Ianto had expected Jack to flirt with all his old friends, and probably the majority of the waiting staff too. He hadn’t expected Jack to remain solidly by his side all night, polite and charming to everyone but giving those special glances to nobody but Ianto. He hadn’t expected Jack’s arm to find its way around his shoulders so often, casual in its easy affection, that firm hand squeezing the top of his arm. And he hadn’t expected the light kiss on his jawline that Jack slipped in subtly when he leaned in to tell him he was going to the bathroom, or the hand drifting softly across his back as he returned.
By the time the night was over, Ianto was certain not only that bringing Jack had been a good decision, but also that Jack really was planning on staying together. Indefinitely.
